HCG (Gonadorelin)

10Kiu

Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) is a glycoprotein hormone consisting of an alpha subunit (common to LH, FSH, TSH) and a unique beta subunit that confers biological specificity. HCG mimics luteinizing hormone (LH) activity by binding the LH/CG receptor on Leydig cells and ovarian theca cells. It has a significantly longer half-life than LH due to its greater degree of glycosylation. Gonadorelin (GnRH analog) may also be included in this listing as a hypothalamic releasing factor that stimulates endogenous LH/FSH release from the pituitary.

Mechanism of Action

HCG binds the LH/CG receptor (LHCGR), a Gs-coupled GPCR on testicular Leydig cells, activating cAMP/PKA signaling that stimulates steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR) and cholesterol side-chain cleavage enzyme (CYP11A1), thereby driving de novo testosterone biosynthesis. In ovarian tissue, HCG triggers final oocyte maturation, ovulation, and corpus luteum formation. HCG also maintains intratesticular testosterone concentrations necessary for spermatogenesis, independently of pituitary LH.
