Mechanism of Action
Lu (2013) reviews glutathione synthesis in the cytosol by two enzymes: glutamate-cysteine ligase, the rate-limiting step, made of catalytic and modifier subunits, followed by glutathione synthetase, with the availability of cysteine as a key determinant. Forman et al. (2009) review glutathione's roles in eliminating oxidants by reduction and electrophiles by conjugation, and in maintaining redox homeostasis, along with methods for assessing cellular glutathione status.
